Concrete leveling is the process of making the surface of concrete flat, smooth, and level. It is usually done by using a machine called a power trowel. The power trowel has a blade that moves up and down while rotating. The blade scrapes off excess concrete as it moves up and down, leaving a flat surface behind. There are many methods of concrete leveling. In residential construction, power trowels are used on a belt-driven pulley system. In commercial construction, the machines are attached to long steel booms and driven by electricity or diesel engines. Special machines called concrete vibrators and rubber tire rollers can also be used on the same equipment in place of power trowels. Cement is mixed with aggregate, water and other materials to form concrete. When the mix hardens, it sticks together to produce a solid mass. Power trowels are used with a drive belt that turns pulleys connected to long steel booms. The machine can also be driven by an engine or electricity. There are many types of machines called concrete vibrators and rubber tire rollers that use the same equipment as power trowels but have an additional component, a rotating drum with an agitator to pulverize the concrete. Vibrators and rubber tire rollers do not produce concrete, but instead just break up the concrete into smaller pieces and make it easier to spread. A power trowel is the most common type of machine used for finishing surfaces with a trench or in-ground bedding. They are also sometimes used by landscapers to create a pattern in rocks. There are two types of power trowels: hand held and cart mounted. Hand held power trowels have a longer handle that can be grasped by one hand, while cart mounted units have a shorter handle that is located on the front of the trowel for ease of use. The speed and texture of a power trowel can also be varied by adjusting how fast it rotates. For smaller leveling jobs, a concrete expert can use a handheld tool to smooth out the wet concrete. |
